Scotland – featuring Highlands, Islands & Cities including the Edinburgh Tattoo
Day 1: Tues., Aug. 6 -We will depart from Barrie at 4:00p.m. and the Tour Office at 4:30p.m. This afternoon our coach will transfer us to the airport in Toronto. Tonight we start our journey with a direct overnight flight on Air Canada to Edinburgh. Our flight departs at 8:40p.m.
Day 2: Wed., Aug. 7 - This morning we arrive in Edinburgh at 8:30a.m. and meet our coach and driver. We will transfer to Glasgow and have some free time in the city centre before checking into our centrally located hotel for the evening.
Dinner this evening is at the hotel.
Day 3: Thurs., Aug. 8 -Today we travel to Edinburgh and our day will include a guided city tour, free time for
shopping and detailed sight-seeing of the Old Town’s Royal Mile, New Town’s Princes Street and George Street. This evening we attend the spectacular Military Tattoo on the Esplanade of the magnificent and historic Edinburgh Castle. (B & D)
Day 4: Fri., Aug. 9 - Today we depart Glasgow to travel along the side of Loch Lomond to Oban where we join the ferry sailing and our island hopping Hebridean adventure begins. We sail past Duart Castle and the Isle of Mull. We continue on to the Isle of Barra Beach Hotel, our home for the next two nights. (B & D)
Day 5: Sat., Aug. 10 - After breakfast, we have the day to explore and sample life on the island. Enjoy the magnificent views and beautiful beaches. Visit the island airport and watch the planes land on Cockle Beach. (B & D)
Day 6: Sun., Aug. 11 - This morning we depart Barra on the ferry to the Isle of Eriskay, then continue to South Uist, the second largest of the islands. Our destination this afternoon is Stornoway, for the next two nights. We will explore the Isle of Harris, and learn about its famous Harris Tweed, home to the highest mountains in the Outer
Hebrides and the stunning white sands of Luskentyre. Following a visit to the historic 16th century church at Rodel and lunch in nearby Leverburgh. (B & D)
Day 7: Mon., Aug. 12 - Today our highlights include the pre-historic stone broch at Dun Carloway, Gearrannan blackhouse village, the famous Callanish stone circles and the remote beaches and communities of Great Bernera and Uig. This is the wilderness of the Western Isles at its finest. (B & D)
Day 8: Tues., Aug. 13 - After breakfast we depart Stornoway on the early ferry to Ullapool travelling in the north coast to John O’Groats, the most northerly point on the mainland. We will visit Castle Mey, which was the private home of the Queen Mother. We travel to John o’ Groats, a small, scattered, coastal village set amongst some of the most sensational and extreme landscapes combining awe-inspiring coastal stacks, dramatic cliffs and white sandy beaches. Our overnight stay is at the Seaview Hotel in the most northerly inhabited point of the mainland. (B & D)
Day 9: Wed., Aug. 14 - Today is a full day tour to Orkney, travelling by ferry from John O’Groats. We will be met by our coach and driver/guide for a full day of touring including the Stone age village of Skara Brae , Scapa Flow, Stromness, Kirkwall, Churchill Barriers, Ring of Brodgar, the Standing Stones of Stenness and the Italian Chapel. Day 10: Thurs., Aug. 15 - After breakfast we depart John o’ Groats to travel to Ballater in the Speyside Valley and our two nights’ accommodation in the Deeside Inn Hotel. The area is a natural tapestry of wild flowers, plants, trees, rivers and lochs with a backdrop of mountains. (B & D)
Day 11: Fri., Aug. 16 - Today we visit Royal Deeside, a favourite retreat of the Royal Family. Ballater is a town where almost every shop has a by ‘RoyalAppointment’ coat of arms above its door. It was Queen Victoria herself who, to preserve the peace of Balmoral, insisted that the Deeside Railway should terminate at Ballater. We will stop at Crathie Church where the Royal Family worship when they are at Balmoral. (B & D)
Day 12: Sat., Aug. 17 - Today we travel south to Peebles for our three-night stay. We will travel along the East coast travelling through Arbroath, Carnoustie and St. Andrews with stops enroute. (B & D)
Day 13: Sun., Aug. 18 - Our tour today takes us through the Scottish Borders, a land with a turbulent and romantic history and stunning natural scenic features. Set amidst this backdrop of beautiful hills and valleys, is the historic town of Selkirk with its William Wallace (Braveheart) associations. We continue westwards through the hills and valleys that inspired the novels of Sir Walter Scott. This relaxed day’s touring includes a demonstration of the working sheep dogs and a visit to the Scottish Wool Centre. (B & D)
Day 14: Mon., Aug. 19 - This morning we travel to Gretna Green, steeped in history and magical charm, Gretna Green Famous Blacksmiths Shop is where couples have come to marry since 1754. This afternoon is free to explore the town of Peebles. (B & D)
Day 15: Tues., Aug. 20 - This morning we depart Peebles and travel up the West Coast to Ayr with scenic stops enroute including the beautiful Turnberry Golf Course. This afternoon visit the Burns Centre and the home of Scotland’s famous poet. (B & D)
Day 16: Wed., Aug. 21 - This morning we depart the hotel for the Glasgow Airport. Our direct flight departs at 9:45 a.m. and our scheduled arrival in Toronto is at 12:15p.m. Our coach will be waiting at the airport for our return trip home. (B)
